ALT@S 2023

From the 11th – 15th April 19 young people from all over New Zealand sailed and kayaked around various islands in the Hauraki Gulf and practiced their new seamanship knowledge and leadership skills as part of the ATL@S National School!

Along side early morning swims (resilience training) and wind blowing through their hair, participants learnt and performed all the various roles required to sail a maxi-yacht and sea kayak including navigation and weather, cooking, and general housekeeping while at sea under the guidance of the crew. Each young person took a turn at helming Steinlager II, the world record holding boat, standing where Sir Peter Blake and his crew stood as they won each leg of the Round the World Yacht Race over 30 years ago – what an amazing thing to be able to say they have done.

Well done to all the participants on learning some valuable life skills and thanks to the amazing crew and our partners The New Zealand Sailing Trust and Auckland Sea Kayaks
